The committee held its first meeting on Monday, which included new member Eliot Pence, founder of the Canadian defence-tech firm Dominion Dynamics. (The Logic)
Talking point: Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the committee’s creation last week, saying it would weigh in on “all aspects of the Canada-U.S. economic relationship.” The Council of Canadian Innovators, a scaleup lobby group, criticized it for lacking representation from the tech community, despite tech’s emergence as a trade issue. In a statement to The Logic last week, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc’s office said the committee includes representatives from “a wide range of backgrounds.” Pence had a sit-down meeting with the prime minister earlier this month to discuss defence, geopolitics and entrepreneurialism. The committee’s first meeting focused on maintaining preferential access to the U.S. market and strategies for the upcoming review of Canada’s trade pact with the U.S. and Mexico.
