The industry group called for Prime Minister Mark Carney to add a representative from the “digital and innovation economy” to the group of advisors he tapped to strategize ahead of trade talks with the U.S. (The Logic)
Talking point: Carney’s recently announced advisory group mainly includes representatives from the mining and energy sector, and industries that have been targeted by U.S. tariffs. However, tech has also become a potential trade issue. CCI CEO Patrick Searle said the government’s decision to leave out the innovation economy will weaken Canada’s position before negotiations even begin. The U.S., the largest market for Canadian digital service providers, is shaping the global rules for digital business through trade policy, procurement and standards. Searle said the new iteration of Canada’s trade pact with the U.S. will determine who captures the profits in the digital economy. The Prime Minister’s Office and Canada-U.S. trade minister didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said the digital economy “touches almost all businesses,” but wouldn’t say why no tech-specific companies were tapped for the committee.
