Talking point: Amazon and the FTC declined the Journal’s request for comment. While the exact aspects of the business that would be targeted in a potential suit is not known, in recent years the regulator has been looking at whether Amazon favours its products over those of its competitors and has scrutinized Amazon Prime bundling services, sources told the Journal. FTC Chair Lina Khan, who started her roughly three-year term in June 2021, has been an outspoken critic of big tech monopolies, and notably wrote a law-review article about how antitrust laws have failed to rein in Amazon and others. Shortly after her appointment, Amazon and Facebook asked that she recuse herself from possible antitrust cases against them. (The FTC recently denied Meta’s request.) Amazon has gone on to criticize the FTC for harassing founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos and other executives. Khan has refused to back down.
