Lina Khan said U.S. competition regulators will not be dissuaded by tech companies “flexing some muscle or kind of trying to intimidate us,” noting in a lengthy interview that the “lighter-touch treatment” to which the tech giants are accustomed is in the past. (CNBC)
Talking point: U.S. tech giants are facing scrutiny on their own turf, and the world is watching. On top of the FTC’s lawsuit challenging Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp, proposed U.S. legislation would govern app stores more strictly and prevent tech platforms from restricting users in certain ways. Apple and Google have protested the legislation, with the latter warning earlier this week that the bills interfere with cybersecurity protections and break basic functions like Google search and maps “while giving a free pass to foreign companies.” The issues in the U.S. come a month after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tasked Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne with “a broad review of the current legislative and structural elements that may restrict or hinder competition.”
