The company, which is the subject of an antitrust investigation and under review for its planned acquisition of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, filed a request with the Federal Trade Commission to remove Lina Khan from Amazon investigations. (The Wall Street Journal)
Talking point: U.S. President Joe Biden appointed Khan to a term ending Sept. 25, 2024. Khan, at 32 years old when appointed, is the youngest FTC chair ever, as well as an outspoken critic against Big Tech. While studying law at Yale, she wrote a paper on how modern antitrust laws failed to check Amazon’s power. Amazon argued in its 25-page motion that Khan’s previous criticism of the company prevented her from considering its “antitrust defenses with an open mind.” The FTC declined to comment to The WSJ, but during her confirmation proceedings, Khan said she would consult with the commission’s ethics officials if questions about recusals arose.
