Talking point: This is the largest grant of its kind given to Dalhousie University, which signed the first-ever research agreement between Tesla and a university in 2015. Dalhousie researchers Jeff Dahn, Chongyin Yang and Michael Metzger have since gained worldwide attention for their research in improving battery lifetimes and lowering costs, clearly catching the eye of the Canadian government. The new funding for Tesla’s longtime research partner comes as the automaker’s CEO Elon Musk has publicly rallied for better battery options, including the recent purchase of a Mississauga, Ont. startup’s patent to build cleaner batteries. Tesla plans to work with Dalhousie until at least 2026.
