Talking point: With a wave of governments and manufacturers pledging to ramp up electric-vehicle production, Tesla and others in the battery industry are being pushed to minimize waste—particularly amid growing competition to bid up limited supplies of copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare-earth minerals. An International Energy Agency report released today details the hurdles ahead for battery makers, and suggests that recycling used EV batteries could be one way to ease supply pressures and limit waste as countries potentially stockpile new mineral supplies.
