The renewed contract will see Tesla’s Advanced Battery Research team operate out of Dalhousie University until at least 2026. Two new research chairs—Chongyin Yang and Michael Metzger—will take over from battery pioneer Jeff Dahn, who is preparing a transition to retirement. (Electrek)
Talking point: The group has operated at Dahn’s Halifax-based lab since 2016. The team has filed at least six patents for Tesla, as the Palo Alto-based firm pursues a million-mile battery to power its EVs. The terms of the contract between Tesla and the Dalhousie research team were not disclosed. In an October 2020 interview with The Logic, Dahn said the research group was “funded at a pretty high level…. We have the ability to publish our work—that’s highly important for graduate students so they can get jobs afterwards—and in exchange for that, Tesla gets the IP. That’s the deal that we made. It may not be the best deal, but it works for us.”
