Quebec-based electric battery recycler Lithion Technologies applied to the province’s Superior Court for creditor protection, a move that came with the layoff of 45 employees. (The Logic, Le Journal de Montreal)

Talking point: It’s another blow to a beleaguered sector that has been heavily supported by Canadian governments. In Quebec specifically, Lithion’s insolvency comes after the failures of Northvolt and Lion Electric, and the struggles of Taiga and Flo. Lithion counted General Motors and Hyundai among its partners, and had added Nissan to the list earlier this month. The company had also planned to expand facilities in the U.S, Europe and South Korea. According to a filing to the court by KPMG, the company’s proposed creditor protection monitor, Lithion was not profitable and could run out of cash within months, with over $4 million in negative cash flow expected by February 2026. More than $100 million has been invested in the firm mainly through equity, including around $30.8 million in public funds from the likes of Fondaction, Investissement Québec and Economic Development Canada.
