Talking point: This is GM’s second major battery-recycling deal in Canada announced so far this year, after expanding its agreement with Ontario-based Li-Cycle earlier in January through its joint venture with LG, Ultium Cells. The investment comes as GM readies its Bécancour, Que., battery-material plant with POSCO, a chemical company that has a relationship with Lithion investor IMM Investment Global. GM Ventures, meanwhile, has been deepening its presence in the Canadian startup scene, increasing its funding in Montreal AI company Algolux last year and launching a new project with Toronto-based Untether AI in April. Earlier this year, the venture fund named a Canada-based principal, Ted Graham. Lithion, which raised $22.5 million from the Quebec government in April, said it will use the strategic partnership with GM to validate how its recycled materials work in new batteries, and bring down EV costs as the technology scales.
