The Toronto-based AI firm and the German defence contractor will work on applications for large language models and other AI tools in managing information, helping with decision-making and training for naval vessels. Talking point: TKMS is competing with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean to sell up to 12 patrol submarines to the Canadian navy, in a procurement worth a reported $60 billion. Both contenders and their respective governments are touting benefits to Canada if they’re chosen. Germany, for example, has signalled it could buy Bombardier planes and Canadian software in return. In Cohere, TKMS is adding a partner with which Ottawa is keen to work. Cohere is also working with Thales on AI systems for Canadian naval ships, which the French defence contractor plans to count towards its domestic spending obligations. Federal departments and security agencies have also explored using Cohere’s technology in their operations.
