The mediator working with the e-commerce giant and Unifor Local 114, which represents hundreds of workers at Amazon’s Delta, B.C., warehouse, sided with the union and recommended the parties move to binding arbitration-mediation to reach a first collective agreement. The British Columbia Labour Relations Board will make the final decision. (The Logic)
Talking point: Unifor has been taking on what it deems Amazon’s lack of co-operation with the union through unfair labour practice complaints with the labour relations board. In a report to the board, according to the union’s statement, the mediator said that Amazon’s actions had caused bargaining to reach a dead end. The company had asked the union to waive the right to challenge it on the speed with which it requires workers to operate, and said it wouldn’t budge from that position. Amazon also did not present a wage proposal until April, despite the mediator asking for it earlier. Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson said in a statement to The Logic that Amazon has participated in the complex bargaining process in good faith and will continue to do so. “It’s been our intent all along to ensure our site continues to operate efficiently and safely.” Amazon is challenging the unionization ruling in the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
