Talking point: Britain’s Labour government figures it can save £45 billion ($83.5 billion) a year by automating some civil service work as well as digitizing services it currently uses paper to deliver. Bureaucratic adoption of technology is one key pillar of the U.K.’s plan to build a thriving AI sector. Prime Minister Mark Carney has similarly promised that the Canadian federal government will “become much more productive by deploying AI at scale.” Many public servants already have access to Copilot tools. Ottawa’s AI strategy requires departments to consider using AI for new initiatives, but does not set out spending or savings targets.
