Some Canadian universities disengaging from Huawei research

The University of Waterloo is “disentangling” itself from partnerships with the China-based telecom company over the next few months, following consultations with Canada’s security agencies. The University of Toronto decided in April to stop “new agreements, new projects within existing agreements, renewals and funded extensions” with Huawei and is establishing a research security office, vice-president Leah Cowen wrote in an email. McGill University has “made an important decision to not develop further contracts with Huawei,” its spokesperson told The Logic. Carleton University, which has previously celebrated a research collaboration with Huawei, now “has no active agreements” with it, spokesperson Steven Reid wrote to The Logic. He did not answer a follow-up question on whether that reflects a new Carleton policy. (Toronto Star, The Logic)

Talking point: Universities and the federal government have played hot-potato over dealings with China: Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne issues statements saying he expects universities to protect sensitive research without precise details; universities say if the government sets rules, the schools will obey them. Waterloo’s move drew Champagne’s praise. The University of British Columbia “is continuing to evaluate its position on the matter,” spokesperson Matthew Ramsey said. The University of Calgary did not answer questions by deadline.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include a statement from the University of Toronto, which was received after publication.
