The Ottawa-headquartered commerce company nominated Joe Natale, an adviser at private equity firm Altas Partners, for election at its annual general meeting (AGM) on June 17. If voted in, the former Rogers CEO will become lead independent director, replacing the retiring Robert Ashe, an ex-IBM executive. (The Logic)
Talking point: Shopify’s recent run of board appointments has brought on executives with experience at big U.S. tech firms like Instacart, Microsoft, Salesforce and Uber, in addition to cult names in startup-land like Lulu Cheng Meservey and David Heinemeier Hansson. Natale, by contrast, is a longtime Canadian telecom executive. His November 2021 ouster as CEO of Rogers came amid a family feud and board battle for control of the firm. Shopify’s AGM filing also showed that CEO Tobi Lütke’s total compensation rose to US$150 million in 2024, up from US$20 million a year earlier. Three-quarters of his pay last year consisted of stock options.
