Talking point: In Simo, Shopify is adding the head of a company that handles last-mile, rapid delivery for retailers at a time when it’s working to expand its own logistics service. Shopify doesn’t yet make much money from its fulfillment network, announced in June 2019, but has seen demand increase during the pandemic, and analysts expect it will eventually boost the firm’s take rate, or cut of merchant orders. Simo replaced Canadian Apoorva Mehta as CEO of Instacart in July. Both Instacart and Shopify have benefited from retailers wary of Amazon’s grocery ambitions; in her day job, Simo manages relationships with many of the same firms who’ve turned to Shopify’s enterprise platform to build out their online commerce presence. She also has experience on the board of a Canadian industrial darling, spending nearly two years as a director of Cirque du Soleil before its November 2020 sale.
