Talking point: The project, which will expand the port’s container capacity by 60 per cent, was among the first to be referred to the Major Project Office to be considered for fast-track approvals. The office doesn’t directly issue approvals, but is supposed to act as a single point of contact to speed up the process. Many of those projects were already well on their way by the time that happened—the port project, for example, had already completed its federal environmental assessment in 2021. Environmental advocacy group SNAP Québec plans to challenge the approval in court over potential risks to the copper redhorse, an endangered fish species found only in a few rivers in the St. Lawrence Plain.
