Talking point: Murati briefly served as OpenAI’s interim CEO after the board ousted Sam Altman in November 2023; she later joined the employee push that helped reinstate him. She led the development of several of the firm’s public-facing generative products like ChatGPT and Dall-E, which showed off what its foundational AI models could do. Murati is the latest major figure to leave OpenAI, after chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and Andrej Karpathy; president Greg Brockman is currently on sabbatical. The firm has continued to advance its technology, releasing new models that it says can reason—a major AI milestone—earlier this month. In an internal note she shared on X, Murati said she was leaving to “create the time and space to do my own exploration.”
