Talking point: A ribbon-cutting ceremony is reportedly scheduled for Friday. In Ottawa, Carney called the bridge “a symbol, but also a fact, of co-operation between our countries.” In February, Trump vowed to “not allow” the bridge to open, arguing the U.S. should own half of it. (Canada agreed in 2012 to cover the $6.4-billion in construction costs, and be paid back in toll revenues, but co-owns the bridge with Michigan.) Hours earlier, trucking magnate Matthew Moroun, whose family owns the Ambassador Bridge, had reportedly met U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Carney did not say how Ottawa got the green light to open the bridge this week.
