Talking point: Trump warned Monday he would “not allow” the bridge to open until “Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” arguing the U.S. should own “at least one half of this asset.” In 2012, Canada agreed to cover the $6.4-billion cost of construction, but co-own the bridge with Michigan. The deal says Canada will be paid back with toll revenues. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he reminded Trump of these facts and that it was built with steel and workers from both countries. A statement from Whitmer’s press secretary, Stacey LaRouche, called the bridge “a tremendous example of bipartisan and international co-operation,” and that the governor “looks forward to attending the ribbon cutting.”
