AI Minister Evan Solomon says he’ll meet with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman next week to get more clarity about the company’s changes to ChatGPT, and plans to meet with other AI companies operating in Canada to make sure there is a “consistent and clear approach to escalation, local coordination, and youth protection.” (The Logic)
Talking point: Earlier this week, Solomon summoned OpenAI’s safety team to Ottawa to answer questions about the company’s safety protocols, following reports that though OpenAI knew about disturbing conversations Jesse Van Rootselaar had with ChatGPT, it chose not to tell police about them until after she committed one of the worst mass shootings in Canadian history. The company’s vice-president of global policy said in a letter to federal ministers that lessons learned from Tumbler Ridge will inform its policy in Canada about how to assess future safety risks.
