Talking point: Magna managed to get a piece of Veoneer’s advanced driver-assistance business after a battle to take over the Stockholm-based startup’s parent company ultimately ended with it being outbid by the chip giant Qualcomm last year. After the acquisition, Qualcomm decided to hang onto Veoneer’s software unit, Arriver, and its “Tier-1” business working directly with big automakers. It chose to sell its active safety and restraint control systems units (the latter of which is still up for grabs). Magna said it will get 2,200 engineers with the deal and the acquisition will increase its driver-assistance sales to US$3 billion by 2024, up from US$1.8 billion for both companies this year. Magna shares fell about two per cent Tuesday afternoon to $76.22.
