Colin McKay has been with the company for over 12 years, and most recently led Google’s public policy team in Canada. Jeanette Patell, head of Canada government affairs and public policy for Google-owned YouTube, will replace McKay on an interim basis, according to Google spokesperson Shay Purdy. (The Logic)
Talking point: McKay’s departure comes as Google and the federal government continue to negotiate the implementation of the Online News Act, which received royal assent in June. As The Logic reported in June 2022, McKay was part of Google’s campaign against the law, which compels Google, Facebook and the like to pay for news linked to their platforms. Meta has since blocked Canadian news on Facebook and Instagram. Google has threatened a similar move, but has yet to do so. In a LinkedIn post, McKay noted the “difficult conversations” he had to have in the role around issues including child safety, personal privacy, information security and content moderation.
