In an open letter published Thursday, the Council of Canadian Innovators, a scale-up lobby group, along with over 36 other signatories from fintechs including Borrowell, Neo Financial and Koho, urged Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to reaffirm the government’s commitment to open banking and provide a clear delivery plan. Talking point: The federal government missed its initial commitment to implement the system in early 2023, and when The Logic asked for an update in September, the Department of Finance said it was “continuing their work at this time.” There’s still uncertainty over which federal minister owns the open banking file following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet shuffle in late July. Former associate finance minister Randy Boissonnault previously oversaw the initiative, but was reassigned to employment minister. The Prime Minister’s Office reportedly released mandate letters for two new ministerial roles created from the shuffle—Citizens’ Services Minister Terry Beech and Sport Minister Carla Qualtrough—but will not be updating mandates for all other ministers.
