Federal records show consultants updated their registrations this month to lobby for the Chinese automaker, “to advise the government of Canada on matters related to the expected market entry of BYD into Canada for the sale of passenger electric vehicles, and the establishment of a new business, and the application of tariffs on EVs.” Automotive News Canada was first to report the news. Talking point: BYD—which by some measures surpassed Tesla as the world’s biggest EV maker thanks to its low-cost offerings—builds buses in Ontario but has had little Canadian presence in the passenger car market. Its potential entry comes as Canada is under pressure to match the U.S.’s high tariffs on Chinese EVs. Ottawa’s 30-day consultation on potential tariffs began July 2, and leaders are said to be discussing how to close potential loopholes that would let Chinese automakers sell into the U.S. market.
