Former Privy Council clerk Janice Charette will be Canada’s chief trade negotiator to the U.S. and a senior advisor to the prime minister and Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as Canada, the U.S. and Mexico review their trade deal. (The Logic)
Talking point: Charette will team up with Canada’s new ambassador to the U.S., Mark Wiseman, and lend her considerable public service experience to his business deal maker approach. Canada’s former ambassador Kirsten Hillman previously did both jobs, but Prime Minister Mark Carney split the roles in anticipation of the trade pact review in July. Stephen Harper appointed Charette to the top public service job in 2014. She later served as Canada’s High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, before returning to the clerk’s office in 2021. She also advised Carney as part of his transition team when he took office.
