Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed the idea that Canada should restrict exports of Canadian oil and other natural resources to the U.S. to counter the threat of additional 50 per cent tariffs. “Being a reliable supplier is important,” Carney said Wednesday in Red Deer, Alta. “One of the biggest commodities, arguably the best, is trust,” Carney said. When Canada is a supplier of vital commodities, “you’ve got to think really hard about not supplying.” (The Logic)
Talking point: The Liberal government under then-prime minister Justin Trudeau considered such export levies last year as one way to retaliate early in the trade war. Ontario Premier Doug Ford wants that option back on the table. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith remains strongly opposed. Energy expert Heather Exner-Pirot has argued that if Canada stopped shipping crude to the U.S., it would need to cut production. “It would be as economically painful for us as for them.”
