Talking point: Several premiers started banning U.S. alcoholic beverages in March after President Donald Trump slapped broad-based tariffs on Canadian goods. While Ottawa has eased off on some retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in key sectors, Jamie Tronnes, executive director of the Center for North American Prosperity and Security, said the alcohol boycott—and Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s threat to cut off elecricity—are what really caught attention in Washington. April saw the biggest drop in U.S. wine shipments to Canada—its biggest export market—in more than 20 years, according to trade data compiled by Bloomberg. Canada was not alone in slowing the flow; also, things could pick up again as Alberta and Saskatchewan have recently ended their boycotts.
