Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested on Thursday that President Donald Trump could move quickly when he is ready to make a deal—despite his envoy to Ottawa claiming negotiators are “not anywhere close” to a resolution on the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). (The Logic)
Talking point: Trump’s recent comments suggest the U.S. is unlikely to agree to a 16-year extension of CUSMA by July 1, when it will join Canada and Mexico for their first trilateral review meeting. That would trigger up to 10 years of annual reviews, assuming no withdrawal. “What I have seen with the president is that you’re not close to making a deal, and then you make a deal,” said Carney, but it has to be the right one. “We could have signed a bad deal a year ago.” Carney said Trump called him Wednesday to talk about defence ahead of next month’s NATO summit in Turkey, including Arctic security. “Canada is pulling its weight now in NATO,” Carney told reporters.
