Talking point: Chip giant Nvidia has also reportedly discussed joining the round, which Thrive Capital is expected to lead, with backing from Microsoft. (Both Thrive and Microsoft are existing investors.) Apple has lagged OpenAI’s other prospective investors in the sector and its participation in the round could help it make up ground in the AI race. It wouldn’t be the firm’s first partnership with OpenAI, however. In June, Apple announced plans to work with the company to integrate AI features into its operating systems. While the iPhone maker doesn’t typically invest in startups, backing OpenAI could help Apple ensure it maintains a lead in generative AI, as startups and tech incumbents vie for market share.
