This is the second time the Teamsters have attempted to unionize the group of workers at the warehouse in Nisku, south of Edmonton. The Alberta Labour Relations Board needs to certify the application before going to a vote. The board declined to certify a proposed vote last fall, concluding the Teamsters didn’t have enough signed union cards. (The Logic)
Talking point: It follows a historic victory on Staten Island earlier this month for a group of warehouse workers who voted to form Amazon’s first North American union. Workers at a second Amazon facility on Staten Island began voting this week on whether to unionize as well. “Amazon workers near and far have been vocal about their desire for change,” said Teamsters Local Union 362 representative Chance Hrycun in a statement. The Alberta workers would be Amazon’s first unionized warehouse employees in Canada, though there have been several failed attempts in Ontario among third-party Amazon drivers. The United Food and Commercial Workers is disputing Amazon’s conduct in those cases at the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
