Employees at Amazon’s largest New York facility voted 2,654 to 2,131 in favour of joining the nascent Amazon Labor Union. There are 67 challenged ballots, though not enough to change the outcome. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) still has to certify the result. (The Logic)
Talking point: The historic vote follows Amazon’s intense anti-union campaigning leading up to the vote. Inside the Staten Island warehouse, management hung “Vote No” banners and held weekly meetings to deter union support. The company also launched a website touting the benefits of remaining non-unionized. The union victory comes amid mounting labour unrest among Amazon’s growing workforce. A separate vote in Alabama was deemed too close to call yesterday, and workers from another warehouse in Staten Island are poised to cast votes April 25. The Teamsters union, meanwhile, is carrying out a North American-wide effort. In a statement, Amazon said it was “disappointed with the outcome of the election in Staten Island” and said it’s evaluating its options, including filing objections.
