The storytelling platform’s co-founder will become an executive advisor to Webtoon brands, a division of Seongnam-si, South Korea-based internet giant Naver, he said in a LinkedIn post. Wattpad president Jaenne Lam will oversee operations, reporting to Webtoon Americas CEO Ken Kim. (The Logic)
Talking point: The leadership changes come after Naver agreed to buy Toronto-based Wattpad for more than US$600 million in January 2021. Lau and co-founder Ivan Yeun, now chief strategy officer, started Wattpad in late 2006 with some public-domain classics on a mobile-accessible site; it soon became a popular repository of fan fiction and other stories. The company struck publishing deals for the authors of its most popular titles, then began printing books itself. It now produces movies and TV shows; in June 2021, Naver combined its studio division with that of Webtoon, under Wattpad executive Aron Levitz. Lau himself has been a key founder in Canada’s post-dotcom-bust technology boom. He remains a venture partner at Two Small Fish Ventures, run by wife Eva Lau, as well as a board member of the Toronto International Film Festival and the city’s MaRS startup support organization.
