Aron Levitz, previously general manager of Wattpad Studios, will be president of the combined unit, which will begin with more than 40 employees. The studio will produce TV shows, movies and books based on fiction and comics that users publish on the two platforms. (The Logic)
Talking point: Wattpad and Webtoon will remain separate units under Naver, the South Korean tech giant that closed its acquisition of the former Toronto-based firm last month. Wattpad Studios, launched under Levitz in April 2016, aimed to monetize the IP of its writers by licensing their stories for other forms of entertainment media. Hits include After, which made more than US$69 million worldwide. Last year, it began developing and producing shows and movies itself. The combined Wattpad Webtoon Studios will hire staff in Toronto, Los Angeles and elsewhere, said Wattpad spokesperson Kiel Hume.
