The U.S. production company will get a first-look option on stories on Wattpad, a Toronto-based user-generated stories platform. Eric Lehrman, Wattpad’s head of content development and production, will oversee the the deal, which the United Talent Agency helped broker. (BetaKit, TechCrunch)
Talking point: Sony’s first-look option will give it the opportunity to purchase hits that already have a fan base amongst Wattpad’s 70 million monthly users. In return, Wattpad will have more certainty around the production pipeline for promising stories on its site. Wattpad hasn’t had trouble getting its content from its site into television and movies: the company is co-producing a U.S. cable TV show based on Death Is My BFF, a series by Katarina E. Tonks that has more than 62 million reads on Wattpad. The film After, currently in theatres, started as a Wattpad story, as did Netflix’s The Kissing Booth.
