Andy Jassy announced the cuts late Wednesday, confirming an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal. The majority of job cuts will be in Amazon Stores and its people, experience and technology teams, representing about five per cent of the company’s corporate jobs. Amazon Canada did not answer The Logic’s questions on how the cuts will impact its staff in the country. (The Logic, The Wall Street Journal)
Talking point: The number of layoffs includes reductions announced in November, which the Seattle-based company originally said would affect about 10,000 jobs. It also marks the biggest cut among major tech companies in the past year, according to the Journal. In 2022, the online retail giant posted two consecutive quarters of its slowest growth rate in the last decade as the e-commerce boom slowed as pandemic restrictions lifted. Across the industry, 1,018 tech companies laid off over 153,000 employees around the world in 2022, according to data from the website layoffs.fyi. Big Tech companies previously promised more jobs and expansions in Canada, but have been vague about those plans amid the recent spate of mass layoffs.
