Talking point: Amazon Canada did not immediately respond to The Logic’s questions regarding the report, including whether the potential layoffs may impact the company’s Canadian operations. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon was evaluating its Alexa business as part of a months-long cost-cutting review. The company experienced its most profitable quarters during the pandemic as consumers were stuck with online shopping, but that boom slowed as lockdowns lifted. Amazon’s global workforce was 1.52 million in the second quarter, almost 100,000 fewer compared to the end of March as it saw its lowest growth rate in two decades. The planned layoffs would follow a string of cuts in the tech sector in recent months, including Meta’s decision to slash 11,000 jobs last week.
