The American football league and Alphabet-owned division announced the partnership to make out-of-market Sunday afternoon NFL games available on YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels beginning in the 2023 season. The seven-year deal is worth roughly US$2 billion a year, and could rise if certain goals are reached, The Wall Street Journal reported. (The Logic, The Wall Street Journal)
Taking point: Sunday Ticket has been on DirecTV since 1994 and the agreement expires at the end of this season. YouTube’s deal for the distribution rights—which also reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Apple, Amazon and Walt Disney’s ESPN—cements Google’s place as a major player in the streaming space, as live sports broadcasts shift away from traditional cable. Online-streaming services overtook the decades-old TV technology in the U.S. for the first time in July. In September, Amazon Prime agreed to pay US$13 billion to the NFL to become the exclusive home of Thursday night football in the U.S. for the next 11 years.
