The Halifax-based energy developer announced that an unnamed AI company has signed a 20-year lease for the first phase of a data centre in Point Tupper, Cape Breton. EverWind plans to spend more than $8 billion on the campus and $2 billion to build onshore wind projects, calling the combined development Nova Scotia’s largest private investment. The initial 95-megawatt facility is targeted to open in late 2027, with an expansion bringing its capacity to 420 megawatts in 2028. (The Logic)
Talking point: The federal government included EverWind’s proposed green hydrogen project at Point Tupper in the deal book of investment opportunities for last month’s Canada Investment Summit. It would use electricity from new wind farms to produce green ammonia for international markets. The company said it’s still pursuing that project, too. The wind farms won’t be ready when the data centre opens, meaning it will initially rely on existing electricity infrastructure. EverWind promised to cover electricity costs related to the project and protect other customers from rate increases. Provincial NDP Leader Claudia Chender, however, questioned how Nova Scotia’s government would enforce those assurances, and criticized it for backing the project without consulting the public.
