Negotiations will continue in hope of landing a comprehensive trade deal with the United States within the next month, but “everything’s on the table if there’s no agreement,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said after meeting with all of Canada’s premiers in Charlottetown. President Donald Trump’s deadline for putting 50 per cent tariffs on some Canadian goods, largely over previous Canadian retaliation for earlier tariffs, approaches on Aug. 19, but there’s no need to respond in advance, Carney said. Talking point: The federal and provincial governments are united on handling Trump’s trade belligerence, but that unity is inextricable from the need to reach a broad deal with the United States, not several narrow ones, Carney said. He also pointedly thanked Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum for sending firefighters to help combat wildfires, because “that’s what friends do when you have a crisis.” He did not mention any help from Trump, who has said yet more tariffs are coming because the smoke has blown into the United States.
