Bank of Nova Scotia reported $960 million in revenue from Canadian personal banking, up 5 per cent year over year and below analyst forecasts compiled by Visible Alpha. Its global wealth management division generated $481 million in profit, up 18 per cent from $407 million last year, while global banking and markets profits rose 5 per cent to $544 million. (The Logic)

Talking point: Scotiabank posted net income of $2.3 billion, compared to $993 million in the same quarter last year. That prior-year quarter was weighed down by a $1.36-billion impairment charge related to the sale of its banking operations in Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama, the bank said in a press release—profit in its international banking division rose 10 per cent to $717 million. The lender also set aside more provisions for credit losses than a year ago, allocating $1.18 billion, up from $1.16 billion. On the earnings call, Scotiabank CEO Scott Thomson said unrest in Mexico is not expected to materially affect its results, adding the bank has no exposure to resorts or resort operators.
