Talking point: Last week, Bessent told an interviewer that “Alberta has a wealth of natural resources, but they won’t let them build a pipeline to the Pacific.” He then added: “I think we should let them come down into the U.S., and Alberta is a natural partner for the U.S.” Meanwhile, Alberta separatists have had meetings in Washington, D.C., and B.C. Premier David Eby called it “treason.” Smith said she would not “demonize or marginalize” those with “legitimate grievances” about Ottawa, including over pipelines, but it was not for the U.S. to decide. “We expect the U.S. administration to respect Canadian sovereignty,” Carney added.
