Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Sunday that he and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to begin negotiations for a comprehensive trade deal aimed at more than doubling bilateral trade to $70 billion over the next five years. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Prime Minister’s Office said Carney also accepted an invitation to visit India early next year. Relations have come a long way since Canada and India halted trade talks in 2023 as Ottawa publicly accused the Modi government of orchestrating the shooting death of a Canadian Sikh activist in B.C. India has denied involvement. Carney told reporters Sunday at the G20 summit in South Africa that a potential trade agreement would put the two countries’ existing “strong commercial relationship” on a “sound footing” through protections for businesses, clear rules and dispute resolution mechanisms.
