India will let Canada fully restore its diplomatic presence, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Tuesday, after both countries launched a “new roadmap” that includes plans for high-level talks on bilateral trade, energy investments and “refreshed collaboration” in higher education and research, including artificial intelligence. Talking point: Canada and India expelled most of each other’s diplomats as part of the fallout from then-prime minister Justin Trudeau accusing India’s government of plotting the 2023 killing of a Canadian Sikh activist in B.C., which it firmly rejected. Ottawa had also put off a trade mission to India and halted trade talks. Anand, who visited New Delhi this week, and her Indian counterpart jointly issued a statement Monday that says a trade mission is planned for early 2026. Anand said on Tuesday that negotiations for a trade agreement are not resuming at this time, as Canada wants its diplomats in place first. Anand will also visit China and Singapore this week.
