At the turn of the millennium, Nortel Networks was at its peak. The Ottawa-based company was once so dominant that it made up 35 per cent of the value of the TSE 300 and was the ninth most valuable corporation in the world.
When the company collapsed, its engineering talent moved on, and global network providers moved in. But are we at a turning point? Innovative networks like Open Radio Access Networks (ORAN) have the potential to revolutionize the telecommunications landscape by offering a decentralized approach.
In light of this disruptive innovation, the question arises: Can ORAN build Canada’s next Nortel?
The Logic’s reporter David Reevely joined Tareq Amin, chief executive officer, Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony; Caroline Chan, VP and GM, 5G Infrastructure Division, Network Platform Group, Intel; and Yung Kim, former president of Korea Telecommunications, to discuss how Canada can leverage ORAN to establish a thriving made-in-Canada manufacturing industry. This event—with opening remarks from Ibrahim Gedeon, chief technology officer of TELUS—provided valuable insights for understanding how ORAN can shape Canada’s economic and technological landscape.
