The trade war launched by U.S. President Donald Trump has, in some ways, forced Canada to confront its long-running productivity crisis with renewed urgency. Internal trade barriers, which have been a cause of frustration for decades, are already beginning to tumble. The “Buy Canadia”’ movement has put a renewed focus on what the country can—and cannot—produce within its borders.
In response, politicians from across the spectrum are trying to frame an existential economic and political threat from south of the border as an opportunity to realize Canada’s potential as a global economic powerhouse. That’s easier said than done. To confront a productivity crisis, you first have to define what it means and what is causing it—again, easier said than done. As Canadians head to the polls in the most consequential election in a generation, it’s essential the country understands what’s at stake for the economy if the productivity crisis continues, and, crucially, how it can be fixed.
The Logic’s newsroom explores these questions and more in this hour-long conversation with economics columnist and editor-at-large Kevin Carmichael and reporters Anita Balakrishnan and Murad Hemmadi. This event features special remarks from Desjardins Group’s chief economist and strategist Jimmy Jean.
