Talking point: Canada’s softwood lumber industry is used to the U.S. playing hardball, but it now faces an “existential threat,” association president Derek Nighbor said Wednesday. After countervailing and anti-subsidy duties more than doubled to about 35 per cent, President Donald Trump slapped an extra 10 per cent duty on lumber and a 25 per cent tariff on cabinets and other wood products. Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged $1.25 billion, including in loans and credit lines, to help the softwood lumber industry navigate the disruption and promised to prioritize use of Canadian lumber to build homes. Nighbor said that was welcome, but noted no mention of lumber out of Carney’s last meeting with Trump.
