Asset manager Blackstone and energy services firm Halliburton made the equity investment into the Houston-based firm, and acquired another US$225 million in shares from its existing backers. VoltaGrid also announced it will acquire Propell Energy Technology, headquartered in Granbury, Texas, for an undisclosed sum. (The Logic)
Talking point: VoltaGrid builds natural gas power plants next to data centres, letting clients get their compute facilities online without having or waiting to connect to local electricity grids. Tech firms are increasingly employing this “bring your own power” approach; VoltaGrid says it has orders for 7.5 gigawatts of production capacity through 2030. Among the firm’s projects is a 190-megawatt power plant for a data centre it’s proposing with Beacon AI in Saint John, hometown of VoltaGrid co-founder and CEO Nathan Ough. New acquisition Propell, meanwhile, has operations in Calgary. It manufactures and installs equipment for power generators and the oil and gas industry.
