Along with stopping all vehicle production at the Ontario factory, General Motors has also temporarily laid off about 1,850 unionized workers with pay. Production at its Oshawa flex line, which makes the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac XTS, has also been stopped. But work continues at the plant’s stamping operations, as does production at GM Canada’s Ingersoll and St. Catharines plants, GM spokesperson Jacqueline Thomson said in a statement to The Logic. (The Logic, Canadian Press)
Talking point: GM’s Canadian operations are feeling the effects of the labour dispute, which saw the company’s United Auto Workers union members walk off the job on Monday. It’s their first strike in over 10 years, over factors like job security, wages and health care. Unifor, which represents GM workers in Canada, said it expects two-thirds of the firm’s St. Catharines plant to shut down next week, which would temporarily lay off 700 workers, and that it wasn’t sure of the Ingersoll plant’s future. On this, Thomson declined to comment.
