Talking point: The proposal in Vancouver comes as a growing number of automakers turn their attention to EVs. Formula E is in its seventh season, with races in Italy, Chile and Saudi Arabia. A private Canadian promoter of the race series approached the city about hosting, according to the motion; one of the councillors said it could help boost Vancouver’s tourism sector, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. The promoter, OSS Group, estimated the economic impact would be about $80 million, and that it would create 3,000 jobs. The NDP’s Tuesday provincial budget committed $100 million to the tourism sector, including support for anchor attractions. It wouldn’t be Vancouver’s first time hosting car races. The city hosted the Molson Indy for over 15 years, until Molson Sports and Entertainment pulled the event in 2004, determining there wasn’t enough corporate support for it.
